The Minnesota State Board of Trustees and Chancellor Devinder Malhotra invite nominations and applications for the position of Chief Audit Officer.
The Chief Audit Officer is the senior auditor responsible for managing and directing the Minnesota State Office of Internal Audit, a co-sourced internal audit function. This office provides independent, objective assurance and consulting activities designed to add value to, protect, and strengthen Minnesota State and the 37 state colleges and universities.
The Chief Audit Officer advises the development of enterprise level strategies and monitors implementation to assure compliance with internal controls and achievement of the missions and goals of Minnesota State. This position supports the Minnesota State enterprise risk management (ERM) efforts and plays a critical role in risk assessment and mitigation.
The Chief Audit Officer is a member of the Chancellor’s cabinet, works closely with the Audit Committee of the Board of Trustees and reports both to the Board and to the Chancellor. The Chief Audit Officer is a strategic partner and resource along with vice chancellors, presidents, and others regarding a range of strategic, operational, financial, reputational, and compliance issues and risks.

The mission of Internal Audit is to enhance and protect organizational value by providing risk-based and objective assurance, advice, and insight. Internal Audit helps Minnesota State accomplish its objectives by bringing a systematic, disciplined approach to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of governance, risk management, and control processes.
The internal audit function at Minnesota State has transitioned from transactional to transformative. It now is focused on a more forward-thinking, strategic, and consultative approach to internal audit. The Chief Audit Officer works as a strategic partner with the chancellor, the cabinet, the presidents, and senior leadership within the system. This role enjoys access to system leadership and a seat at the table while directly reporting to the Audit Committee of the Board of Trustees.
The ideal candidate will possess a minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible audit experience in a complex business environment, preferably in a higher education, government service, or other similar environment. He/she will have demonstrated ability to design and implement risk-based audit plans that identify and assess key enterprise risks and opportunities across the organization. A graduate degree in accounting, finance, or related field is preferred, but not required.
